On November 22, 2022, the ICF International Culture Federation, in collaboration with the Canadian College of Public Health (CCPH), hosted an online Health Science Salon on the topic “Functional Nutrition Intervention for Fibromyalgia — Role of SOD Superoxide Dismutase.” The event was organized and conducted by M2 CPN Clinic, with participation from several professional nutrition offices across Canada, including Hâvre de santé joyeux et paisible (Québec), Markham CPN Clinic, Julia CPN Clinic, and London CPN Clinic.
The lecture, led by Julia Wong, lecturer of the Canadian College of Public Health and Director of Julia CPN Clinic, continued the previous session’s theme on functional nutrition approaches to fibromyalgia. Julia introduced key bioactive nutrients — SOD (Superoxide Dismutase), Proanthocyanidins, and S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) — and explained their physiological roles and potential clinical benefits.
Citing current scientific research, she highlighted that SOD helps reduce inflammatory responses by stimulating macrophages to release anti-inflammatory cytokines, protects against pre-cancerous cellular changes, and mitigates oxidative stress associated with chronic diseases. SOD has also been shown to inhibit neutrophil-mediated inflammation, reduce free radical damage to skin and tissues, and may contribute to slowing the progression of diabetes, chronic inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases, and hypertension.
In the second half of the lecture, Julia emphasized that regardless of whether one has fibromyalgia, maintaining a balanced diet is essential. However, certain foods may unknowingly trigger symptoms. She recommended food sensitivity and intolerance testing as an effective tool for gut restoration and nutrient absorption improvement, forming a vital part of personalized health management.
The event successfully brought together registered professional nutritionists, trainees, and health practitioners from across Canada, fostering continued collaboration between CCPH and ICF in advancing integrative public health education.
